According to Tech Columnist Brian Fagioli, Samsung has created Android Wear devices in the past.

Android Wear devices are hardly lighting the world on fire. Heck, smartwatches in general are not particularly popular. With that said, some consumers find real value in more basic wrist-worn wearables such as the fitness-focused Fitbit. Still, there are fans of more advanced smartwatches, such as Apple Watch, too.

WHILE SAMSUNG HAS CREATED ANDROID WEAR DEVICES IN THE PAST

While Samsung has created Android Wear devices in the past, its new focus is Tizen-based “Gear” wearables that work with its Galaxy devices — and other smartphones running Google’s mobile OS. Today, Samsung announces iOS support for three of its Tizen-based Gear devices — Gear S2, S3, and Fit2. Will iPhone users really pick this over the Apple Watch, though?

“Starting today, users can download the Samsung Gear S app for the Gear S2 and Gear S3 or the Samsung Gear Fit app for the Gear Fit2 on compatible iOS devices from the Apple App Store. Once the appropriate app is downloaded, users will be guided through steps to complete pairing with the user’s compatible Samsung wearable device,” says Samsung.

THE GALAXY MAKER FURTHER SAYS

The Galaxy-maker further says, “While features and functions will vary by device, iOS users will be able to enjoy the Samsung Gear S3’s timeless and stylish design, IP68 water and dust resistance, as well as the built-in GPS, Alti/barometer and Speedometer apps. It is available in two bold models – the Gear S3 frontier, which takes inspiration from the active explorer with a rugged design, as well as the Gear S3 classic, featuring an elegant style with the balance found on luxury timepieces. Users will also be able to track their fitness by monitoring distance and route traveled, running pace, calories burned and heart rate.”

While expanded compatibility is appreciated, this will be a very hard sell for iPhone loyalists. The Apple Watch is a very good wearable, and it works seamlessly with the company’s ecosystem and other devices. There would have to be a very compelling reason for an iPhone user to choose a Gear device over Apple Watch Series 2, and there doesn’t really seem to be one…
