Instagram confirms live video is on the way

Live video is coming to Instagram, CEO Kevin Systrom confirmed, although it’s unclear how the feature will work or when it will launch. The news comes months after the arrival of Instagram Stories, the company’s Snapchat clone.

“Live is really exciting for us,” Systrom told the Financial Times. “I think it can enhance what we’re doing. If I’m trying to strengthen relationships with someone I love, them streaming video to me live would be an amazing way to be closer to them.”

It’s another way Instagram is trying to differentiate from Snapchat after closely copying Stories, but then continuing to improve on the concept with additional features (as seen in today’s batch of updates).
There’s also the question of whether Instagram streaming will tie in with Facebook. When you post an image to Instagram, it will also post on Facebook by default, but not the other way around. It’s possible Instagram could take a similar approach with live video, but given the app has yet to integrate Stories with its parent network, there’s nothing to suggest it would do the same for live.

In any case, live video seems like a natural extension for the app. I mean, it’s called Instagram for a reason; it’s always been about sharing moments, in the moment.

But please, just don’t livestream your next brunch at a trendy restaurant. Photos will suffice.
