Tech Columnist Ewan Spence published an article on the new Galaxy S8 leak highlights Samsung’s mysterious button
The latest leaks confirm the details known about the handset’s physical interface, but also perform a much more significant role. They remind those who are in the market for a new handset that the Galaxy S8 is not only going to be here just a few weeks but also highlights the features that are going to be found in the handset, as well as the shiny black color that is sure to stand out in the marketing.
The new details about the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus come form a set of videos that are believed to have been published by a screen protector manufacturer. In the run-up to a major product release peripheral manufacturers will have a mix of digital CAD models and physical samples to ensure the correct fixtures and fittings so consumers can buy accessories for their new handset on day one.
SHARP EYES AND JUDICIOUS USE OF THE PAUSE BUTTON MEANS
Sharp eyes and judicious use of the pause button means it is possible to confirm the external details of the phone. The top of the unit carries a secondary microphone (presumably to pick up ambient noise) and the SIM card tray (which likely also holds the MicroSD card for additional storage). The base of the unit has a USB-C port for charging and connectivity as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack for a wired audio connection.
The biggest change to the buttons is the removal of the physical home key. We now have confirmation how the change will work while the S8 is in stand-by. Thanks to the use of the always-on feature of the OLED screen, that key is now rendered in software and is clearly visible in the video. No doubt the two other Android keys will complete the trifecta when the handset is ‘switched on’.
The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus handsets will be revealed at a New York-based event on March 29th. There are strong indications that the handsets will go on sale on April 21st in a number of territories (including South Korean and America).
