With the news that Zelda: Breath of the Wild will feature DLC, it has been met with a very mixed response by fans. In a recent interview, Nintendo’s Bill Trinen does his best to explain the reasoning behind this decision.
THE MAIN TAKEAWAY FROM TRINEN’S EXPLANATION IS THAT BREATH OF THE WILD
The main takeaway from Trinen’s explanation (starting at 41:42 in the below video) is that Breath of the Wild is obviously a very large game in terms of its content and production. The DLC in that sense is a byproduct of that, as the complexity of developing an open world game means there is more left to do.
So this DLC release, in part, is Nintendo’s attempt at including absolutely everything it can from Breath of the Wild’s production. In all honesty, this is entirely understandable. From my experience working on various games, you always have things left over that didn’t make it in. Open world games amplify this situation further due to their inherent increased complexity.
WHAT TRINEN CONVENIENTLY OMITS IN HIS EXPLANATION IS THE REAL REASON
In that, while extra content is entirely fine and even welcome that is not the real issue with this DLC, or specifically the game’s season pass. The issue fans have with this season pass is that it locks out the game’s hard difficulty setting, which is something that in all honesty should have been included with the game’s standard release.
While you have separate releases like the Master Quest version of Ocarina of Time, that had a sizable amount of content changes made to it, this difficulty mode lock out feels more than a bit off and is understandably why so many fans are angry at this DLC set.
